In Finland, salt is not used to clear the sidewalks and paths - gravel is. Inevitably, the gravel gets swallowed up by the layer of ice, and paths become very slick with a layer of slippery ice. Finns call this dangerous weather "skull crushing weather" or pääkallokeli.
