In the wintertime in Helsinki, the sun will not rise until after 9am and has completely set before 3pm. It is not true polar night like in the north where the sun is not seen for weeks, but it is enough darkness to throw off your circadian rhythm and cause immense sleepiness by dinnertime and cause sleepless nights. I started writing this composition when the power went out one night, and it came to embody the prevailing darkness of winter kaamos.
